More Than a Game: Connections and Community in Women’s Sports
How do the stories we inherit shape the paths that we choose?
Join the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for a conversation with Valerie Still, a WNBA Hall of Famer, author, and direct descendant of William Still, widely regarded as the Father of the Underground Railroad. Drawing on both her family’s legacy and her career as a professional basketball player, Still will reflect on how the stories of those who came before us continue to shape our understanding of resilience, perseverance, and representation.
Still will be joined by the Philadelphia Sisters Sports Group and ESPN award-winning TV play-by-play commentator and analyst for women’s basketball, Brenda VanLengen, who will examine the impact of sports communities and invite audience members to consider their own athletic experiences.
A document display of historical materials will explore the history of women’s sports in Philadelphia, from school and recreational teams to collegiate and professional athletics, highlighting the women and girls who participated across the court, field, pool, and beyond.
