Carpenters’ Company of Philadelphia – “Changing the Face of the City - Society Hill & Independence National Historical Park Walking Tour”

Join The Carpenters’ Company of Philadelphia for a walking tour of Society Hill and Independence National Historical Park, focusing on the contested interplay of planning and preservation in post-World War II projects. There will be a focus on how the projects unevenly affected existing community members along the lines of race and class–and the role that members of the Carpenters’ Company played in that redevelopment.

The tour will be led by Dr. Francesca Ammon of the Weitzman School of Design. Ammon is a cultural historian of urban planning and the built environment. Her teaching and research focus on the changing spaces of American cities, from World War II to the present. She grounds her interdisciplinary approach to this subject on the premise that the landscape materializes social relations, cultural values, and political and economic processes.

The tour group will meet promptly at 10 a.m. corner of 5th & Market Streets.
This one-time tour is a part of our “Changing the Face of the City” programming series. Throughout this year, we will present a series of programs and events that explore the intersection of historic preservation and urban planning/renewal through the lens of equity and social justice.
