Embracing the Season at IceFest in Chambersburg
Where & When Pennsylvania Winter 2025
At some point, someone figured out that if you get cabin fever in the winter, and the reduced daylight gets you down, the best thing you can do is go outside and embrace the weather.
Whether than means hitting the slopes or just going for a walk, psychologists say this practice significantly elevates your mood and reduces stress. Add great food, entertainment, artistry, and activities for kids, and you have a prescription to fight the winter blues.
IceFest in Chambersburg is a cherished tradition that encourages people to step outside, see their breath in the air, and celebrate the season. For more than 20 years, this event has been a beacon of community spirit, drawing people downtown to marvel at ice sculptures of all shapes and sizes.
IceFest will be held from Thursday, Jan. 30, to Sunday, Feb. 2. It stands to reason that the largest ice festival in Pennsylvania would feature some huge displays. Live carving of the giant ice sculptures will begin Thursday. DiMartino’s Ice Company from Jeanette, PA, will return on Friday for more live ice sculpting throughout the town. Don’t miss the chance to take a photo on the ice throne. Activities for all ages have turned the event into a family tradition. The IceFest Scavenger Hunt has three age categories, so everyone has a chance to participate and win a cash prize.
As in years past, the festival will have food vendors on the Square and in the parking lot on North Main Street. Some returning festival favorites include horse-drawn carriage rides and live performances. Kids love racing their friends on the ever-popular, double-wide ice slide. And parents love that it’s free.
On Saturday, Feb. 1, attendees can chase off the chill at the Chili-Q, where some of the region’s best professional and amateur chefs will compete for the championship. The Beer Garden will also return on Saturday.
The annual Run Your Ice Off 5k will occur on Sunday, Feb. 2. The course goes through downtown and onto the rail trail. Run, jog, or walk in the 5k that benefits local non-profits. Well-behaved furry friends are welcome to join.
In addition to the featured events during the 4-day festival, Chambersburg art galleries, shops, and restaurants will have extended hours, and community organizations will sponsor special events.
