Inoculation Nation: Smallpox in the 18th Century hosted by Carpenters’ Hall

During the 1770s, Philadelphia experienced a significant smallpox outbreak which was countered by an early method of inoculation. In this fascinating virtual discussion, moderator Maiken Scott of WHYY and a panel of experts will discuss 18th-century smallpox inoculation as well as its connection to the First Continental Congress. Carpenters’ Hall hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774, and it is known as one of the most important steps in achieving colonial independence. Learn how smallpox compared to yellow fever as a public health crisis, how the halting of inoculations contributed to Philadelphia’s 1775 smallpox outbreak, and what we can learn from 18th century inoculations that can inform current efforts to promote the coronavirus vaccine.

General Admission is $5. The event is free for members of The Carpenters’ Hall Company and the Friends of Carpenters’ Hall
